Ripped Collage Exercise.
Hi there, I’m Jess, an Abstract artist and art facilitator for Talk About It, Mate and other community enterprises. I create various art exercises for all ages, predominantly adults. Still, I like exploring child-like practices to allow ourselves to delve into our child ego states whilst not being overwhelmed with conventional art practices. One of my exercise ideas is this ripped collage experiment.
Materials
Coloured card
Glue
Firstly, gather all your supplies, coloured paper, origami paper, tissue paper and glue. The idea is to imitate something either of nature, people, animals etc but the technique you have to use is ripping. No scissors! The objective of this is for you to use primitive techniques to explore organic layers and to be curious about how you work and how you create your final piece.
Rip away! Rip all the materials you have as you create your picture. I’d recommend playing around with different compositions before sticking them down with glue. You can create different layers, and textures from the tissue paper and you can get imaginative with what you’re imitating.
In my example, I was going for a dessert-type background, and I added white spikes to make my cactus’s appear like cactus’s. You can be as abstract as you like, or as precise it is entirely up to you! You can see examples of the group's creations on my project page!
Now enjoy your final finished work! If you want to be experimental you can add further detail with felt pens, oil pastels or other mixed media.
Hope you enjoyed the exercise!
